OK. So here’s the thing. I’m going to write about sports from time to time and mostly when I think they cross over into mainstream issues because otherwise, I’m just another sports beat writer. “Not that there’s anything wrong with that! – Seinfeld”
Last night we witnessed the first game changing decision with the new “Chase Uttley Slide Rule”. Stop.
We also listened to Jays coach, John Gibbons comment “Maybe we should just come out in dresses tomorrow.” Stop.
I’m going to discuss both. Hopefully short enough that you stay somewhat interested.
First – The comment. Why? There is no reason to throw out an outdated, useless, sexist comment like that. Whether he meant anything by it or not. He sounds and looks like an idiot and a Neanderthal. This is 2016 and making comments like that are both ignorant and so blatantly obviously wrong to say, that I can’t believe we are going to have a story about. And there will be. Have you been on Twitter? He’s wrong for saying it. Apologies aren’t enough anymore. We, as men, as a society, have to respect everyone in it and making these stupid comments is not how we do it. It’s pathetic and shows a complete lack of brain power to have to fall to the lowest common denominator when it comes to having an argument or disagreement. Then again, Trump is still on his way to becoming the GOP nod and his closest rival is Cruz, so maybe we have a lot farther to go than I thought.
To stay with this line a moment farther…everyone is talking about the “pussification” or “pansification” (Greg Zahn used something along those lines last night. Also, its baseball, not hockey. Not football. It’s a non-contact sport, relax) of the game. Those lines come from the same ignorant line of thinking that Gibbons used. You’re on TV, Greg. Kids look up to you. Be a better role model when you open your mouth in front of everyone. Use different words. Try not to sound like the stupid jock you made yourself look like. Women need to be respected more by men in every aspect of life and when males growing up just hear the same garbage over and over again, they aren’t going to gain anymore respect for women than you grew up with.
Second – The Jays lost on that call. Yes, Jays fans, it sucks and you’re disappointed. I am too. I’m a Jays fan, but really? They made the right call. And to be completely honest, I didn’t even know they made a rule change before last night because I’m not ALL SPORTS ALL THE TIME. I am and have been a huge sports fan my entire life. Played. Watched. Read about. Wrote about. You name it. But there is more to life than just sports, you know?
Back to play at hand. Bautista intentionally reached his hand out and grabbed at Forsythe’s ankle. If you can’t admit that, I’m looking at you, Pat Tabler, then you’re the worst kind of homer sports fan. Just admit it. It’s the first step to getting yourself the help you need. According to the new rule, that was made for safety reasons because Uttley’s slide couldn’t have been a bigger disgrace at trying to break up a double play legally within the rules and sportsmanship of the game than I’ve ever seen, was ILLEGAL. Read the rule. It was and is illegal to do what Bautista did. In his defense/defence(?), all his life he grew up being trained to break up the double play in anyway possible, so long as you can touch the bag. But rules change and so does life, so get over it. That really should be the end of this discussion on whether it was the right call or not. Seriously.
But I want to go a little further. The slides in recent years have been getting more and more ridiculous all the time. I grew up playing ball too and was told to breakup the slide, but we never went out of our way like these guys do. it was getting to the point where they could barely touch the bag, but it was considered ok, because they slid the tip of their finger over the top. Or they started their slide on top of the bag to really takeout the infielder. Again. Just stupid. Play with integrity. There is no reason to make it that obvious what you re trying to do. It’s pathetic really. Uttley’s slide was a disgrace and what Bautista did was interference. It should have been interference last year, yet alone this year, but that’s beside the point. If the infielder has enough time to touch the bag and get out of the way of the bag before you get there, then you shouldn’t be anywhere near him.
You want to get to him before he gets out of the way? Get a better jump.
